Celebrate April Autism Awareness Month
- Focus on BC Research in Autism
Pre-Conference Workshop Thursday, April 22, 2010 – Taking the Stress Out of Mealtimes - Tackling Feeding Issues in Children with Autism
Presented by:
Lauren Binnendyk, Ph.D., BCBA-D
Coast Behaviour Analysts, Vancouver
The difference between a fussy eater and a child with a feeding disorder is the impact the eating behavior has on a child’s physical and social development, and on the family's well-being. For many families of children with ASD and other developmental disabilities, meal times are a source of enormous stress. This workshop will focus on providing research tested strategies for turning mealtimes nightmares into a time to enjoy. For over a decade, Dr. Binnendyk has focused her research and clinical work on supporting families of young children with developmental disabilities and severe food refusal behaviour. Her master’s thesis titled, “A Family Centered Positive Behavior Support Approach to the Amelioration of Food Refusal Behavior” is published in the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions.

Evidence-Based Practice in Sensory Processing Disorder:
Subtypes, Assessment and Intervention
Presented by:
Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, OTR,
Executive Director, Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation and of STAR (Sensory Therapies And Research Center), Colorado
The major objective of this presentation is to update parents, providers, teachers and others on the evidence suggesting that occupational therapy (OT) with a sensory integration approach is effective. In order to accomplish this, first the characteristics of the three classic patterns of Sensory Processing Disorder, and the various subtypes of SPD must be understood. This will be accomplished through a combination of lecture, slides and videotaped examples. She will also summarize recent research on the efficacy of occupational therapy and discuss the empirical evidence that suggests that SPD is a valid disorder and that OT with a sensory integrative approach is effective in making changes in children with SPD. In particular the two treatment trials completed by the SPD Foundation staff will be presented. The application of this trial to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders will be addressed.
