About the Workshop:

Positive Behavior Support has become a foundational approach to improving the lives of families who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities. Dr. Joe Lucyshyn is a leading international researcher in the area of family centred positive behavioral support. He will provide a summary of a seven year study in which he and his research team worked with 10 families of children with developmental disabilities and severe problem behavior and demonstrated success in developing constructive parent-child interaction in family routines.

For:
Community professionals & parents
Level:
Introductory/Intermediate
Focus:
Pre-school & elementary age children with challenging behaviour
Approach:
Intensive hands-on event
Autism-specific?
No

The primary goals of this workshop are:

- to help families and professionals understand the ways in which problematic parent-child interaction can develop in everyday family routines in the home and community. These include dinner time, bedtime or a community outing such as grocery shopping.

- to provide basic knowledge about how to develop family-centred, positive behavior support (PBS) plans that transform problematic parent-child interaction into successful family routines.

Through illustrative examples and small group exercises, participants will develop a basic understanding of how to analyze problematic behaviors within the family environment and how to develop a plan to address these behaviors. Throughout the workshop, emphasis will be on developing a truly collaborative parent-professional partnership in which science-based knowledge is weaved into the fabric of family life in ways that are effective, acceptable, feasible, and sustainable.

This workshop will be limited to 75 participants. Parents and professionals are welcomed.
