Mentor Program for UBC Students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder

Mentor Job Description

The Mentor assists one or more UBC student clients with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (e.g., Asperger’s, Autism), to enhance inclusion in the academic and campus community. Mentors will work on specific areas of focus identified by the student and their Diversity Advisor – Disability. Focus areas include: learning & memory, attention & organization, communication, behaviour, interpersonal skills, sensory, wellness & self-care, and campus resources.

Duties primarily involve assisting the student client to develop strategies around their focus areas in order to improve student engagement and success. Commitment is approximately 2 hours/week per client from October 2011 – April 2012.

Skills required are excellent study skills, effective communicator, and well-informed of campus resources. Qualities required are caring, compassionate, patient and respectful of diversity.Assets include: background knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders, work as a Behaviour Therapist, prior tutoring or education experience. Preference will be given to undergraduate students in their third year or higher, and graduate students.

Mentors employed by Access and Diversity will be required to complete 2 training sessions on Autism Spectrum Disorders and the Mentoring Program. The goals of this program are to increase student’s independence and inclusion in the campus community.

Conditions of Employment:

1. Mentors are expected to attend 2 three-hour workshops: Mon. Sept 26 & Wed. Sept 28, 5-7pm.
2. Mentors are required to follow the guidelines set out by the program and adhere to the expectations and boundaries outlined in the training sessions and contractual agreement.
3. Mentors will be required to audio-tape one of their mentoring sessions with the client, in order to obtain feedback from the Senior Peer Assistant regarding his/her implementation of the mentoring program.
4. Mentors will respond in a timely manner (typically within 24 hours) to e-mails and or phone calls from students or staff of Access and Diversity.
5. Mentors will be expected to inform the A&D Mentor Coordinators of any problems that arise in a timely manner.
