Current Projects

The Bursary Fund
In 2012 ACT provided $12,500 in bursaries to individuals who could not afford to pay the full cost of registering for an ACT event, a slight decrease from 2011. We give priority to those who are low income and/or are traveling to our training events outside their home region. Unfortunately, we cannot fund all of the dozens of parents, para-professionals and students who ask for help because we often exhaust our bursary budget. In 2013 we are setting a goal of $10,000 to be raised through donations for the ACT bursary fund. ACT will match these funds from the money we raise through our live events.

Community Outreach Initiative

ACT recognizes that many groups within the autism community around British Columbia feel isolated, especially if they live outside Metro Vancouver and Victoria. This is a huge, thinly populated province; many parents, siblings and adults with ASD have few people with whom to share their interests and concerns - even when they live in population centres. A priority for ACT is to find on-going support for community connections. We will be further developing our online presence and promoting the training of community faciliators. .

Adult Awareness Initiative

Over the past decade huge strides have been made in raising awarenes of the needs of children with ASD, but there is still little understanding of the challenges faced by the estimated 30,000 adults with ASD who live in B.C. Even more academically able adults with ASD usually have significant difficulties in employment and education. Few have access to help in overcoming the social challenges that are the most formidable barrier that they face. For those for whom autism is more obvious in its impact, there are a number of hurdles that they and their families face; while the may qualify for supported housing or employment support, they often face problems accessing these supports. This initiative will seek to promote awareness of the needs of adults with ASD and will require ongoing funding.  Currently, ACT receives no public or private funding focused on the needs of adult with ASD in British Columbia.

CanadaHelps.org

canadahelps2Donate through CanadaHelps.org  ACT has joined CanadaHelps.org, a Canadian registered charity that gives us an affordable and efficient way to receive online donations.

CanadaHelps issues tax receipts immediately and promptly forwards your donation to the charity you chose, less a 3% fee to cover their costs. If you'd like to add a message to us along with your gift (for instance to make a donation in memory of a friend or loved one) or wish us to acknowlege your gift either on our website or by mail (to you or the family of the person you're remembering) they will send us whatever information you provide.

For ACT, this is a savings in staff time and transaction fees, and for you (the donor) it can be a good way to centralise some or all of your giving--you can direct your donation to the charities you support while reducing the number of receipts you have to keep track of. For further information about CanadaHelps, including their privacy policy, visit the CanadaHelps.org FAQ.

So if this website or ACT's services have been of help to you or someone you know, and you'd like to acknowlege that by making a donation please consider using the CanadaHelps.org click-through button.
