Benn Kramer (August 19, 1956 – October 21, 2005)
By Deborah Pugh, Director of Training & Research, ACT

Benn Kramer, who died last month in a tragic climbing accident, was known to many in the autism community in British Columbia for his exceptional talents as a fearless nature photographer and marathon swimmer. Benn thought nothing of climbing a 90 ft Douglas Fir to take his intimate photographs of eagles nor of undertaking a dangerous marathon swim around Manhattan Island to fundraise for autism.

Benn struggled to overcome the limitations autism brought to his life. He was truly inspirational to those who were fortunate enough to have known him. A very kind and thoughtful man, Benn gave generously of his time and talent to fundraising for others with autism, through his marathons and his photographs. He loved to talk to parents about their children with autism and was generous with
his advice.

Benn has left behind his fiancée, Diane, his brother Issac, nieces Zoe, Zephi, Alethea and nephew Avrum. His family is unlikely to be fully aware of the respect they have earned over the years from many family members of individuals with autism throughout British Columbia. Ben’s family provided him with a strong base while allowing him the freedom to develop his talents and his warm personality, despite their concern for his safety. We extend to them our deepest condolences for the loss of a very special person.

A celebration of Benn Kramer’s life will be held on Hornby Island, B.C. Saturday, November 12th. Anyone wishing details can contact Linda at 250-335-1817.
