The Meaning of Caregiving: Chinese Immigrant Parents of Children with Disabilities

The University of British Columbia Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy invites you to volunteer for research on Chinese immigrants and the caregiving experience.

Title of Study: "The Meaning of Caregiving: Chinese Immigrant Parents of Children with Disabilities"

Purpose of Study: "The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of the life experiences of Chinese immigrant parents caring for children with disabilities in Canada. The second aim is to learn how these parents ascribe meaning to the everyday tasks and activities related to caregiving.

This study involves: One face-to-face interview approximately 60 minutes in length at a location of your choice and a short questionnaire.

Eligibility:

  • you are 19 years or older
  • you are an immigrant from China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan and you have a child with a disability who is between 1-18 years old
  • you are the parent and primary caregiver of your adopted or biological child
  • your child was born in China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan and had the disability for at least one year while living in your country of origin
  • you live in the Greater Metropolitan Vancouver area
  • you can read English or Chinese and
  • you can speak English or Cantonese

A $20.00 gift certificate for local groceries will be provided to volunteers for participating in the one hour interview and filling out a short questionnaire. Child care is provided.
