Individuals with ASD commonly have co-existing, psychiatric disorders. The impact of these conditions on an individual's functioning and wellbeing can often be as great or greater than ASD itself. Their early recognition and treatment reduces complications and improves long-term outcome.

This workshop will review the most common psychiatric disorders that occur in children and youth with ASD-anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, tic and mood disorders. The focus will be on the unique presentation and treatment considerations with ASD children and youth. The workshop will include a review of medication treatments, and an approach to assessment and treatment planning.

Audience participation will be encouraged in order to emphasize real-life application of principles. Diagnosis of ASD will not be considered in detail in this presentation. Those interested in this topic are welcome to view, free of charge, a video excerpt of Dr. Dua's excellent presentation on diagnosis for ACT.
