This advanced level workshop is designed to provide a small group of 35 consultants and behavior interventionists with guided practice in implementation of Applied Behavior Analysis teaching methods. It is suitable for individuals who have already done courses with Dr. Jacobsen or Dr. Vince Carbone and who have practical experience in implementing ABA programs using a Verbal Behavior approach with children with autism. Instruction and supervised practice are provided for the following areas:

  • Establishing instructional control with an unwilling learner.
  • Manipulating motivational operations (MO) during teaching opportunities to maintain attention and maximize learning.
  • Manipulating MO to teach early to advanced manding skills.
  • Teaching early to advanced skills within the following areas: receptive, visual performance, motor imitation, tacting, and intraverbals, including Matching to Sample sequence and intraverbal webbing.
  • Understanding and using joint control techniques.
  • Correlating ABLLS-R objectives to ensure development of functional language

Prerequisites: Substantial understanding of the terminology of Applied Behavior Analysis and Verbal Behavior is a prerequisite for this fast-paced hands-on course. Attendance in an Introduction to Verbal Behavior workshop or equivalent training, and experience in teaching children with autism in either the home or school setting, is also necessary for partici pants to get the full benefit of this opportunity. All participants must be prepared to be actively engaged in the hands-on exercises. Participants should bring a completed ABLLS or ABLLS-R for a child so activities can be applied to programming for a “real” child. Each participant will receive a certificate of participation if they complete the full two days.

Note: Participants must have a basic knowledge of ABA–Verbal Behavior to register in this course. An ACT staff member will contact you before your registration to confirm. To further prepare for this workshop, participants are encouraged to view the online videos available on the ACT website within the ‘What is ABA?’ webpage. All registrants for the Hands On VB workshop will have access to these two videos free of charge.

Please see the full Registration Form for more information about the workshop and the presenters.
