About the Workshop
Michelle Garcia Winner and Pamela Crooke return to Vancouver to present this brand new two-day presentation focusing on the “Social Thinking” approach for teens and young adults with social learning challenges. Social Thinking skills can provide an important scaffold which allows those impacted to navigate the complex social realities both at school and in the workplace. Michelle is well-known for dynamic workshops, and this presentation is guaranteed to illuminate, inform and improve the ways in which we work with adolescents and adults with ASD.
Day 1 will focus on what school teams and families need to know in order to prepare students with ASD and other social learning challenges for their transition to adulthood. Expectations for those emerging into adulthood will be explored, including strategies to help students develop a more mature “Social Thinking” mindset and a realistic transition plan to prepare for life outside the high school day.
Day 2 will provide an important “Social Thinking” framework for supporting adults to achieve better vocational success and improved social relationships, within the context of meaningful community inclusion. This day will provide concrete strategies for coping as an independent adult and build on “Social Thinking” concepts for adults, an area which has exploded since Michelle Winner and Pamela Crooke published Socially Curious and Curiously Social, a new guidebook for teenagers and young adults.
Michelle Garcia Winner is an internationally respected speech language pathologist who specializes in the treatment of students and young adults with social cognitive deficits, including those with Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism and Non-Verbal Learning Disability. Michelle is also the recipient of a US Congressional Award for her development of “Social Thinking” concepts.
Pamela Crooke is the senior clinician at Social Thinking Center and part of the social – cognitive team, and also a faculty member at San Jose State University. Her area of expertise is treatment efficacy in social and relational therapies for individuals with Asperger Syndrome and high-functioning autism.
