Safety for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

A continual challenge, adding greatly to the stress of parents, caregivers and school teams is how to protect children with ASD from putting themselves in danger. This workshop will focus on what parents and school teams can do to teach basic safety to children with autism, and other special needs students, for whom safety awareness is a significant issue.

Participants will gain a practical understanding of a variety of safety issues, and effective strategies, including:

  • the potential dangers that children with autism face at home, in school and the community
  • proactive strategies that can be established to help ensure safetry in the home, school and community
  • safety products and technologies available to aid in maintaining safe environments
  • reactive strategies to implement in response to unsafe behaviors
Toby Honsberger is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and Assistant Principal of the Renaissance Learning Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. For the past three years Mr. Honsberger has concentrated much of his research work on safety issues facing children with autism including assessment of wandering and elopement. His recent research projects include the positive effects of establishing safety related rules in the home.
