Autism Education Opportunities for Individuals with ASD – Post-Secondary

Academically able individuals with ASD attend mainstream college and university program in areas that interest them. Sometimes they require support from the on campus disability office, a service provided by all post-secondary institutions in B.C. Individuals with ASD who require more specialized training have a variety of post-secondary opportunities. ACT provides a listing of programs relevant to those with autism and related special needs.

Many people affected by ASD have the desire to go on to post-secondary or adult education to train for a career or to make the transition to the working world. This page lists some of the programs and resources available to BC students with ASD and related disabilities.

The Ministry of Advanced Education maintains a comprehensive website listing adult and special needs programs and resources in BC, available at www.aved.gov.bc.ca/adultspecialed. Among the resources is a downloadable Resource Directory for Post-secondary Students with Disabilities (.pdf).



Capilano-University-logo-blue  Access to Work Program
The Access to Work program is a 21 week program for students who need extra support to be successful in the workplace.  This tuition free program combines 50% classroom learning time with 50% time at work experience.

Class instruction emphasizes the development of  practical work skills which are required in all employment situations. Students will focus on Aptitudes and Interests, Occupational Health and Safety, Employability Skills, Customer Service and Work Experience in a work sector of  their interest.

Assistive Technology - BC
Mandated to "provide assistive technology resources to persons with disabilities and members of the environments in which they study or work in order to create equitable and useable environments. Technology resources include technology assessment, consultation, the provision of assistive technology, training on the use of the technology, repair and trouble shooting, support and tip sheets". NEADS - National Educational Association of Disabled Students
The National Educational Association of Disabled Students is a consumer organization, with a mandate to encourage the self-empowerment of post-secondary students with disabilities. NEADS advocates for increased accessibility at all levels so that disabled students may gain equal access to college or university education, which is their right. The Association provides information on services and programs for students with disabilities nationwide, publishes a regular newsletter, and conducts research on issues of importance to its members. Members include disabled students, educators, organizations and professional service providers. www.neads.ca

Customer Service and Cashier Training
The Customer Service and Cashier Training Program "is designed for students with barriers to employment. This program has been designed in partnerships with the retail business and hospitality sectors and includes classroom, lab and practicum components. The CSCT program covers all the required skills to prepare students for employment in various positions in the realm of customer service, hospitality, merchandising and cashiering".

Transitions to Work Program
"Looking for ways to find and keep a new job? The Transitions to Work program combines 11 weeks of on-the-job experience with training in workplace skills to help you become a competent and successful employee.

"This program is also designed to assist people who have been out of work for many reasons: parenting, illness, incarceration, layoffs or disability. The program runs for 14 weeks (one semester), beginning with three weeks of in-class sessions (two days each week), followed by 11 weeks of on-the-job experience".

The Job Education and Training and TARGET programs offered by the College of New Caledonia have been suspended as the result of a funding cut, but the College announced in May 08 that they will be replaced by a new program. As of June 08, there have been no details announced.

The goal of the Access Programs is to provide post-secondary education for adults with various disabilities.  These programs will prepare studens for employment, volunteer work and further education.

Triumph will be completing all services by April 30, 2012.
The Employment Program of BC (EPBC) is a new program that will replace the current range of employment supports and services across the province. The new WorkBC Employment Services Centres will be operational as of April 2, 2012 providing services to job seekers and employers in various locations around the province.
