Practical Autism Treatment: ACT has developed this Online Video to give Dr. Calder the opportunity to provide parents across B.C. with a "big picture" look at the practical realities of autism treatment. Using video and programming examples from the life of her own son, now a teenager, Jill brings alive the reality of autism treatment and in the process provides a broad understanding of what treatment means to parents - whether their child is 2 or 18.
Dr. Calder uses humour, research and her experience of the major treatment modalities, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Relationship Development Intervention (RDI), Speech and Occupational Therapy, Social Stories and Social Thinking, to inform and inspire the viewer. The result is a compelling presentation full of important insights into the special challenges of autism for parents and how they can be supported by community professionals to become active participants in their child's treatment.

The Speaker: Dr. Calder is a Medical Rehabilitation Specialist, and has been Clinical Director of Rehabilitation Services for the Thompson Cariboo Health Region since 1991. In her clinical practice, she has special interests in paediatric rehabilitation and brain injury. Prior to her medical career, she received a combined degree in occupational therapy and physical therapy. She has given numerous pre¬sentations on autism to medical and non-medical audiences, with a focus on the need for evidence-based treatment and interdisciplinary co-operation. Dr. Calder has a teenage son with ASD.
Who Should View this Online Video? This presentation was developed for parents primarily but community professionals have found it to be extremely insightful to gain a better understanding of the practical realities of treatment and the parental experience of building a treatment team.
