Technical Help

Individuals with good internet connections and the Chrome web browser generally have no problems viewing our Online Videos. If you do experience difficulties, please read our section on technical troubleshooting tips.  If you continue to have problems please consult someone who is knowledgeable about this technology. Unfortunately ACT’s staff are not technical experts; however if you have a teenager living at home - or know one - he or she will probably be able to lend a hand.

Technical Troubleshooting Tips and Technical Requirements

Requirements for watching Online Videos

A high speed internet connection (via ADSL or cable modem) is required to view Online Video presentations. As previously noted, you'll also need the Chrome web browser and Quicktime installed on your computer. (Make sure that Quicktime is updated to the latest release.) ACT provides two versions of our online videos: high quality and normal quality to ensure that the videos can be accessed and enjoyed by people with various internet connection speeds. If you have a slow connection, please view the normal quality video and allow time for the video to download before viewing to ensure a smooth viewing experience.

Video/Audio is out of Sync
If you are watching video and performing other tasks on your computer, the video may become out of sync. Hitting 'Refresh' on your browser will bring the video back into sync. QuickTime has synchronizing features that will re-sync the video over time, should synchronization be disrupted.

No Connection
If your computer has a firewall (designed to protect the computer from Internet viruses, hackers, etc.) it may prevent access to some or all Online Videos. In this case, you will need to reconfigure Quicktime so that the Online Video can get past the firewall. Here are the steps:

  1. Enter QuickTime
      Got to the "Edit" menu
      Select "Preferences" and "Quicktime Preferences"
  2. Select "Streaming Transport" from the drop down menu at the top of the "Quicktime Settings" window
  3. Either hit "Auto Configure" or do the following:
Select "Use HTTP, Port ID:" and make sure 80 is selected beside it.
NOTE: For some versions of QuickTime, steps 2 & 3 are not as described above. After selecting "Quicktime Preferences" in step one, select the far right tab, Advanced. In the top section (labelled "Streaming") set the "Transport Setup" drop-down list to "Custom" (from "Automatic"). When you do that, a small box pops up. Make sure the settings are "HTTP" and "80", then click OK.

If you continue to have problems, you'll need to consult with someone familiar with computer systems and online videos.

This is a common difficulty for those who are using a computer protected by a network firewall. Schools in particular often have strict security in place. Usually, the solution is to notify your network administrator in advance about what you will be doing, and that you will need to configure the firewall to allow QuickTime to connect to an outside web-server.

If you plan to show this video to a group, or to view it at a special time, make sure you have tried the test or preview video in advance, and resolved any problems that might arise.

No Audio
First, try turning up the volume on your computer speakers. If that doesn't work, it may be that you have an older version of Quicktime, we suggest you download the newest version. You may have to uninstall Quicktime before installing a newer version.

No Video
You may have an older version of Quicktime, please download the newest version, and try again. You may have to uninstall Quicktime before installing a newer version.

There's a message saying, "No Live Broadcast"
You may be viewing what is known as a cached page. Try hitting the "Refresh" button on the tool bar of your web-browser. If that doesn't work, you may need to empty your cache in your web-browser as well.

Why doesn't ACT record all their workshops?

Many of our events are difficult to present by Online Video for a variety of reasons.
We carefully evaluate this initiative and welcome your feedback.
