Employment Experience:

I began working in the field of autism spectrum disorders in 1973 as a parent trainer. My employer was Dr. Robert Koegel of the Santa Barbara County Autism Project, affiliated with the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB).

From 1980 to 1985 I was a staff psychologist at the Camarillo State Hospital (CSH) in California, as well as director of the hospital’s behavior learning laboratory, operated by CSH and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in conjunction with off-campus research activities conducted by Dr. Ivar Lovaas. During this time period, I also served as the executive director of the CSH’s Greenline Teaching Homes initiative, which focused on developing inclusive living arrangements for persons with developmental disabilities.

From 1984 to 1988 I worked at UCSB as a research psychologist III. During this time period, I developed and directed the Behavior Resource Center in Summerland, California.  BRC was an educational teaching center for children, youth, and adults with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and other developmental disabilities.

Additional employment-related activities have included (a) developing and facilitating graduate student programs for the Department of Developmental Services in California (1993-1999); and (b) developing autism clinics for the Columbus Organization, in affiliation with the Regional Center of the East Bay (RCEB) in Oakland, California (2001-2006).

Over the years, I have also provided consultation on developing ABA-related programs for home, school, and vocational settings.

Snapshot of Your Philosophy and Approach to Working with Individuals and Families with Autism

ABA provides the framework for assessing, developing, and implementing individualized programming for children, youth, and adults with ASD. This framework emphasizes the need for naturalistic learning opportunities, preferences, and choices to ensure maintenance and generalization of individual accomplishments. Parents, teachers, and other concerned persons MUST be a part of the intervention from the beginning. The intervention must be consistent, ongoing, and undertaken within the context of a “learning to learn” approach (i.e., listening skills, looking in the direction of instructions, following directions, following multiple cues, being part of the classroom community); with ongoing attention to motivational factors and individual learning styles.
