Employment Experience: |
I have worked with children with special needs for the past 13 years, first as a lead teacher with toddlers and pre-schoolers at the Fraser Centre for children and adults with developmental disabilities, in Atlanta, Georgia. For the past 5 years I have been employed as a Behavior Consultant by MAPCL’s Laurel Behavior Support Services, where I work with families of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. I am currently a Masters student in the Department of Special Education at the University of BC, where I am pursuing studies in the field of autism and developmental disabilities. |
Snapshot of Your Philosophy and Approach to Working with Individuals and Families with Autism |
| I believe in the strength of the family, and my professional goal is to empower family members with the skills and knowledge needed to support their child with ASD. Thus, my philosophy and approach follows an enabling model. I have learned from experience that there are several factors that affect a family’s ability to implement intervention programs, and I strive to develop programs that are both clinically sound and sensitive to these factors. I frequently self-evaluate and have always been open to feedback. This has helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses as a professional. My goal is to expand my knowledge in the field of autism and to continue to develop programs that are validated by research, and result in meaningful change for the child and his or her family. |
